Beat Topic 3

My beat this week was art and entertainment. Here were the top stories:

1. Joan Rivers Facebook account posts about the new Iphone 6 although Rivers has been dead for weeks.

2. Chicago native, Vince Vaughn is joining the cast of True Detective

3. Jimmy Kimmel is now coming to do a show in Chicago after losing a bet with Mayor Rahm Emanauel.

4. More nude shots of celebrities were released. Celebrities included Kim Kardashian, Mary Kate Olsen, Vanessa Hudgens, and more.

5. Emma Watson launches the new “He For She” campaign.

6. Leonardo Dicaprio, Al gore, and others participated in the “Peoples Climate March” in Manhattan this past weekend.

7. The David Bowie exhibit, “David Bowie Is” opens and the Museum of Contemporary Art.

My opinion piece this week is a review of the new David Bowie exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art. The review was published in the Sun-Times and is written by Kevin Nance. I really like how Nance used a lot of images of throughout the review as well as embed a Youtube video. The use of media added a cool element to the review and made it more interactive.

Beat Topic 2

This week, my beat was sports. Here are the top stories:

1. TMZ released the full video of NFL player Ray Rice beating his girlfriend. The NFL has now suspended Ray Rice’s contract indefinitely. The NFL has apparently known about the full video since April. Now, Ray Rice has appealed the suspension through the NFL Players Union.
2. After pressure from fans, Adrian Peterson of the Minnesota Vikings is now bared from all team activities due to child abuse charges.
3. The NFL removes Rihanna’ s song “Run this Town” from the Thursday night football opening.
4. Greg Norman, a famous baseball player almost lost his left hand in a chainsaw accident.

The editorial I chose this week was influenced by Ray Rice and talked about how to best stop domestic abuse in our society. I really like how this editorial was organized. The bullet points made it easy to follow. Furthermore, I like that the Sun-Times incorporated quotes from experts, such as Cory Ryan who is the Director of Connections for Abused Women and Their Children. I think including their quotes made the editorial more unique, as well as, offered an expert’s opinion.

Beat Assignment 1

My beat was local news, politics, and education. Here are the main stories that happened this week.

1. It was reported that JRW team member, Jaheim Benton and his family, have been homeless for the past few months.

2. Four people were killed and another 36 were injured over Labor Day weekend due to gun violence.

3. The city of Chicago released statistics saying that the graduation rate among CPS students improved by 4%, setting a new all time high.

4. An airport van crashed into a concrete guardrail near O’Hare airport on Friday.

5. Bruce Rauner and Gov. Pat Quinn continue to campaign for Illinois Governor. As of the latest poll, Rauner is ahead of Quinn with an 8.5 point lead.

The piece I chose this week is about Jaheim Benton and the neighborhood communities on the South Side. I really liked how the author mentioned that the neighborhood communities on the South Side have come together to help Benton and his family find a home. When talking about the South Side, I often think that the violence overshadows the good things that are happening in the community. It was refreshing that the author showed a different view. I thought the author also did a good job revealing how Mayor Rahm Emmanuel and other politicians have not done much to help the South Side neighborhoods.
